Frequently Asked Questions

In order for a student to be referred to Project REAL, they have to be enrolled in one of the NCESE partner schools. Parents or caregivers from partner schools are more than welcome to speak to the school leaders about a potential referral, as the referral has to be carried out by the school.

Due to our limited resources, NCESE membership is restricted to schools operating in the Hume LGA or neighbouring suburbs. While the benefits can be substantial for the whole school, NCESE membership is a significant commitment, as it requires a significant investment and the allocation of resources towards professional development and capacity building. There are other ways to enjoy some of the services that the NCESE offers, schools are encouraged to contact the NCESE team to discuss different options.

Referring schools must agree to work collaboratively with the Project REAL team to maximise the chances of a successful re-engagement for the referred student. Typically, this collaboration will involve:
  • Actively participating in the intake and referral process.
  • Agreeing to take part in professional development and in regular mentoring and coaching sessions in order to deepen their practical understanding of trauma informed practice and other disciplines such as restorative practices.
  • Carefully considering any recommendations made by the Project REAL team in order to improve the conditions for successful re-engagement, in relation to the following areas: classroom strategies, physical layout of the classroom, differentiation, routine and timetable modifications, etc.
  • Agreeing to actively participate in relevant student support group meetings and care-team meetings for the referred student and their family.

NCESE members can access all NCESE PD Modules at no additional cost, and with a great degree of flexibility in terms of delivery options (e.g. whole school, specific groups, online, face-to-face, etc). Non-member schools and organisations can access these modules for a fee, but as we prioritise NCESE schools, our availability is limited. NCESE members also have access to all training materials via the Resource Library
